The church itself dates back to the 12th century, though it's had the usual medieval facelift over the centuries. Inside, the space feels intimate rather than grand, with decent stained glass and the sort of quiet that makes you actually notice the building breathing around you.

This isn't a showstopper attraction. You'll spend twenty minutes here maximum unless you're the type who reads every brass plaque and ponders the theology of Victorian restoration. But that's precisely what makes it work - it's a proper local landmark, the kind of place where you duck in because you're passing through, not because you've built your day around it.

History buffs will appreciate the medieval bones and the way it's survived urban sprawl. If you're staying at Thamesview Camping just down the road, it's an easy detour on a walk toward the river. The location matters too - you're literally overlooking the Thames where Elizabeth I supposedly addressed her troops in 1588, which adds a bit of atmosphere if you're into that sort of thing.

Free to visit, as most parish churches are. No admission charge, no café, no gift shop. Just a building that's been doing its job for nine centuries. Worth the walk if you're in Tilbury, but don't plan your entire day around it.
