St Gregory's Church, Cornwall

The churchyard at St Gregory's sits on a hillside above Newquay, and you'll find yourself walking through a proper jumble of granite headstones before reaching the medieval church itself. The building's got that solid, no-nonsense look that Cornish granite churches do so well - sturdy enough to have survived centuries of Atlantic weather.

Inside, it's refreshingly unfussy. The walls are whitewashed stone, the pews are well-worn wood, and there's enough light streaming through the windows to actually see what you're looking at. The church dates back to medieval times, though like most parish churches it's been tinkered with over the centuries. You're not looking at anything architecturally spectacular - this isn't a showstopper - but that's rather the point. It feels genuinely lived-in.

It works best as a stop during a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself. Maybe thirty minutes of your time. Families won't hold the kids' attention for long unless they're into graveyards, which some absolutely are. History buffs will appreciate the age and the connection to the village, but don't expect crowds or visitor facilities.

If you're staying at Sun Haven Holiday Park, it's a pleasant enough walk into Newquay proper, and St Gregory's sits usefully on that route if you fancy poking your head in. Free to visit, obviously. Go when you pass through rather than planning your day around it.
