St George's Church

The church sits on a rise above Baldock, a solid medieval structure that catches you unawares if you're wandering the town on foot. St George's is properly old - the kind of place where you can run your hand along stonework that's been standing since the 1300s and feel the weight of that. Inside, the light comes through tall windows in that particular way that makes you forget what time of day it is outside.

It's a working parish church, so opening times vary. Worth ringing ahead or catching the service times posted on the door. There's no charge to look around, and honestly, you don't need more than 20 minutes unless you're into medieval architecture or brass rubbings, which some people absolutely are.

If you're camped at Radwell Lake or Henlow Bridge Lakes - both within spitting distance - this makes a solid half-hour detour if the weather's turning. The churchyard is pleasant enough for a wander, though it's not a destination in itself. Families with older kids might find the Victorian memorials interesting; younger ones will get restless pretty quickly. History enthusiasts will appreciate the building's bones, but don't expect elaborate monuments or treasures.

The real value here is as a punctuation mark on a walk around Baldock itself. Combine it with the town's other medieval bits and you've got a morning sorted. On its own, it's a quick stop worth making if you're passing through, not worth the drive from elsewhere.
