St George The Martyr

The church sits just outside Northampton with the kind of weathered charm you either warm to immediately or find a bit gloomy - I'm firmly in the first camp. St George the Martyr is a solid medieval parish church, the sort of building that's been holding services for centuries without fuss or fanfare. Inside, there's proper timber work, decent stained glass, and the quiet that only old churches manage.

It's worth a stop if you're walking round Northampton itself, though I wouldn't say it's worth a special trip from further afield. The architecture speaks to what parish life looked like for ordinary people across the Midlands - nothing grand, just functional and long-lasting. The stonework shows its age in the best way.

History types will find it interesting enough. Families with restless kids might struggle - there's not much hands-on stuff, and it's the kind of place where you spend twenty minutes looking, then you're done. Allow an hour if you're combining it with a proper walk round Northampton town centre.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - The Home Farm CL or Kirkely Meadows are both close by - this makes an easy morning out before heading elsewhere in Northamptonshire. The area's got better-known attractions, but if you're keen on rural churches and the bones of English parish life, you'll get something from it. Check opening times locally before you go, as smaller churches can be unpredictable.
