St Edward's Church

The sandstone tower of St Edward's Church rises above Shaftesbury's steep medieval streets like something from a Constable painting. Inside, it's all soaring arches and that particular smell of old wood and stone that catches you off guard - the kind of church that makes you want to sit down for a bit, even if you're not particularly religious.

This is proper Dorset history. The church has been here since Saxon times, though what you see now is largely medieval and later Victorian restoration work. The interior rewards a slow wander: decent stained glass, some decent memorials, and that light coming through the windows at certain times of day that justifies the scramble up the hill.

It's most worth visiting if you're already in Shaftesbury exploring Gold Hill or wandering the town's antique shops. History types will find it interesting enough for twenty minutes or so. Families with younger children won't find much to keep them occupied, though the climb up from the town centre might tire them out nicely for the journey back.

Access is free and it's usually open during daylight hours - though do check locally when you arrive, as opening times vary. Allow about half an hour if you're taking your time. The real appeal here isn't the church in isolation, but rather how it anchors Shaftesbury itself. Pair it with a stay at Gold Hill Glamping nearby and you've got yourself a proper little Dorset break.
