St Edward the Confessor

The church sits in the middle of nowhere - well, technically near Banbury, but it feels properly isolated. St Edward the Confessor is a medieval parish church that's genuinely worth a detour if you're camping in the area, especially if you've got even a passing interest in old stonework and quiet corners of England.

Inside, it's the usual jumble of centuries - Norman bits, Victorian additions, a few decent monuments if you care about such things. The real draw is the peace of it. No crowds, no gift shop, just a church that's been doing its job for roughly 900 years without making much fuss about it. You'll spend maybe twenty minutes looking round, longer if you're the type to read every plaque.

Families with young kids will find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already church-spotters. Walkers, though - this is your sort of thing. The surrounding countryside is solid Oxfordshire, all rolling fields and proper hedgerows. Pair it with a stay at Newton Grove or Cotswold View, both excellent caravan sites within five miles, and you've got a proper little expedition.

Getting there requires a bit of navigation - it's not signed brilliantly - and the car park situation is informal at best. But that's part of its charm, frankly. It's the sort of place that rewards people who actually bother to look, rather than the ones just ticking boxes.
