St Edward King and Martyr Church, Goathurst

The churchyard at Goathurst sits on a gentle rise overlooking the Somerset Levels, and St Edward King and Martyr is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The church itself is small - medieval at heart with Victorian additions - and honestly, it's the setting that makes the trip worthwhile rather than the building itself.

Inside you'll find the usual Somerset touches: plain glass windows, Victorian pews, and a chancel that's seen better centuries. The real draw is walking the churchyard path, where you get proper views across the flatlands towards Bridgwater. On a clear day the light here is exceptional. It takes twenty minutes to have a good look round, half an hour if you're the sort who reads every gravestone.

This works well if you're camped at Mill Farm - just a short drive away near the Quantock Hills - and you fancy an easy morning walk combined with a spot of village exploring. Goathurst itself is quiet, no cafe or shop to speak of, so come prepared. Families with young kids will get bored quickly unless they're the type who enjoy graveyards, but walkers moving between the Quantocks will appreciate the route-planning potential.

Free to visit, obviously. No opening hours to worry about since the churchyard is always accessible. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and the village feels properly peaceful rather than just empty.
