St Edith's Church, Shocklach

The church sits quietly on a bend in the road through Shocklach village, about eight miles south of Chester. St Edith's is a proper medieval structure, though you'll need to look beyond the Victorian tidying to spot what's genuinely old. The chancel dates back to the 13th century, and there's enough Norman work in the stonework to keep architecture buffs occupied for twenty minutes or so.

Inside, it's modest and well-maintained without feeling overly restored. The sort of place where you half-expect a vicar to appear from nowhere. There's genuine interest here if you're into churches - the windows tell their story, and the overall proportions speak to centuries of local worship. For casual visitors, thirty minutes covers it comfortably.

This works well as a gentle add-on during a park holiday in the area. Manor Wood, just three miles away, makes an excellent base, and you could easily tack a church visit onto a walk around the surrounding lanes. The countryside around Shocklach is genuinely pleasant - rolling fields, proper village life - so combining a church stop with a proper stomp about the farmland makes sense.

Go when the light's reasonable. Village churches can feel gloomy on grey days, and you'll want to see the architectural details properly. Free entry and open access as with most rural parish churches, though do check before a long drive.
