St Cyrus National Nature Reserve - viewpoint

The cliffside viewpoint at St Cyrus pulls you up short the moment you arrive. You're standing on the edge of proper red sandstone cliffs looking straight out to the North Sea, with Montrose sitting quietly behind you inland. It's one of those spots where the landscape does most of the talking for you.

The reserve itself is a working nature conservation area - not a manicured tourist attraction. You'll see the cliffs rising dramatically above a sandy beach, and in the right season (spring through autumn) the birdlife is genuinely impressive. Guillemots, razorbills, and occasionally white-tailed eagles if you're lucky. The viewpoint walk takes about twenty minutes from the car park, nothing strenuous, though the path can be muddy after rain.

It's brilliant for walkers and serious birdwatchers. Families with young kids might find it a bit exposed and windswept - the views are worth the visit, but there's not much to do once you're up there beyond standing and looking. The cliffs themselves are unstable, so you stay behind the fencing. That said, the beach below is accessible if you're willing to scramble, and it's proper quiet.

Free to visit and open year-round, though winter gales can make the exposed clifftop edge uncomfortable. If you're staying at St Cyrus Holiday Park just down the road, this is an obvious morning walk. Royal Arch Riverside Park is further inland - this viewpoint works as a coastal complement to that base.
