St. Colmcille's Church

You'll find this modest stone church tucked away in Downpatrick, a town that feels properly rooted in Irish history. St. Colmcille's is a working parish church with genuine character - the kind of place where locals actually worship, not just tourists passing through. The building itself is straightforward Georgian architecture, nothing flashy, but there's something about its solidity that appeals if you're interested in how ordinary faith was practised in the 18th century.

The interior is spare and peaceful. Plain whitewashed walls, simple pews, a chancel that doesn't shout for attention. Both Edgewater Holiday Park and Coneyisland Caravan Park sit within five miles, making this a natural stop on a broader tour of County Down. Free to visit, obviously. Go mid-morning when the light's decent through the windows and before the school runs mess up parking.
