St. Chads Wybunbury

The church sits alone on a slight rise outside Nantwich, its leaning tower visible for miles across the Cheshire plain. St Chad's at Wybunbury is properly wonky - the tower tilts noticeably to one side, which gives the whole place a disconcerting charm that makes you keep glancing up to check it hasn't toppled since you arrived.

It's a medieval church, though the tilt is relatively modern. The tower started subsiding in the 18th century because the ground beneath simply couldn't support it, so they reinforced the foundations and more or less accepted it as a permanent feature. Walking around inside, you'll find decent medieval stonework and the kind of quiet that makes you actually notice your footsteps.

This is really for church enthusiasts or history walkers rather than something to drag reluctant kids to. Allow 30 minutes maximum, and check locally whether it's actually open when you visit - opening hours aren't reliably advertised. It's free to pop in, though there's nowhere to park directly outside, so you'll need to find a spot on the lane.

If you're based at Sunny Side Touring Park, it's a pleasant four-mile drive through proper countryside. Combine it with a walk around Nantwich town centre - the medieval high street is far more interesting and has actual shops and cafes. The leaning tower makes for a decent photo if you're the type who collects slightly wonky church pictures, but it's more of a half-hour detour than a destination in itself.
