St. Chad Church, Seighford

The church sits quietly on the edge of Seighford, just south of Stafford, and it's one of those places that rewards a bit of wandering off the main road. St. Chad's is a proper medieval building - the sort of place where you can actually feel the weight of centuries in the stonework. The interior is straightforward rather than showy, which is exactly what appeals. You'll find decent stained glass, some decent monuments, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that never gets old.

It's genuinely free to get in, though opening hours aren't brilliantly advertised so ring ahead or try the door. Expect to spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're properly into church architecture. The churchyard itself is peaceful - more interesting than many, with older graves dotted about.

Histor enthusiasts will get more from this than casual droppers-in, to be honest. If you're cycling or walking between Stafford and the surrounding countryside, it's a worthwhile stop. Not the sort of place kids will stay entertained for long, but families based at Copper Beech Glamping or Fledgling Farm could easily combine a visit here with a proper walk through the Staffordshire countryside.

The real charm is that it doesn't try to be anything other than what it is - a village church that's been doing its job for about seven hundred years. That sort of quiet authenticity is harder to find than you'd think.
