St Brandon's Church

St Brandon's Church sits just outside Durham proper, a 15th-century stone structure that punches well above its weight if you're the type who gets excited about medieval architecture. The interior is genuinely impressive - proper fan vaulting on the ceiling, intricate carvings, and that particular quality of light that only comes through old glass in old buildings. I spent a good twenty minutes just standing there looking upward, which sounds daft but isn't.

It's not the kind of place that demands hours. An hour covers the church itself thoroughly, plus a wander around the churchyard if the weather holds. The real appeal here is for anyone who's serious about ecclesiastical history - the medieval craftsmanship is exceptional, and the setting feels properly removed from the modern world despite being minutes from the city.

Free entry, which is always welcome. The church is still active, so visiting outside services makes obvious sense. Go when the light is good through the windows - late morning or early afternoon, weather permitting.

If you're based at The Gables Pod Camping nearby, St Brandon's works as an excellent half-day excursion that doesn't require driving far. It pairs well with a proper explore of Durham Cathedral and the rest of the medieval city centre just down the road. You won't find crowds here, which counts heavily in its favour.
