St. Botolph's Church

The squat tower of St. Botolph's rises above the Northamptonshire countryside just outside Kettering, and it's one of those churches that stops you dead. What makes it genuinely unusual is the Saxon work - proper Saxon, from the 8th or 9th century - visible in the lower walls and round tower arch. Most medieval churches have been so mucked about with that finding something this old feels like an actual archaeological moment.

Inside, the space is modest but atmospheric. There's Norman work too, added centuries later, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually notice the light coming through the windows. The chancel's worth a look, and if you're into brass rubbings or just want to sit down, it's the sort of place where ten minutes turns into thirty.

It's genuinely free, and there's no faffing about with opening hours - these rural churches tend to be open during daylight. Allow 20 minutes if you're just passing, longer if medieval architecture actually interests you. Families won't get much from it, to be honest; history buffs and church enthusiasts will find it rewarding.

It slots well into a Northamptonshire park holiday. Northfield Farm is barely three miles away, Lakeview Caravan Park and Steepleton Lodge Glamping both within five miles. You could easily combine a wander around St. Botolph's with exploring Kettering itself or hitting some of the better countryside walks nearby. Not dramatic, but genuinely worthwhile.
