St Anne, Hessenford

The church sits quietly in Hessenford, a few miles inland from the Cornish coast near Widegates. St Anne is a proper village church - whitewashed walls, a sturdy tower, and the kind of place that's been ticking along for centuries without fuss. Inside, it's got that particular smell of old stone and candle wax that never quite leaves these buildings, along with some decent period features if you know what to look for.

It's worth a visit if you're into Cornish church architecture or you're passing through on a coastal walk. The churchyard is peaceful, the sort of spot where you can sit for five minutes and actually hear yourself think. That said, it's not a destination in itself - you won't spend more than thirty minutes here unless you're doing the brass rubbings or chatting to the vicar.

If you're based at Tencreek Holiday Park, it's a reasonable detour on a rainy afternoon or a wander inland from the beach. The village itself is small and unremarkable, but that's rather the point. No crowds, no gift shop, just a working church that's been there since medieval times. Free to enter, as most village churches are, though opening hours aren't guaranteed so don't plan your whole day around it. Better to treat it as a curiosity between bigger attractions rather than your main event.
