St Andrews Parish Church

The Church of St Andrews sits in the village of Stillington, just a few miles south of York, and it's one of those unexpected architectural treasures that makes a Sunday drive worthwhile. The building itself is largely 15th century, all pale stone and proper medieval charm, with an interior that feels genuinely lived-in rather than museum-like. The chancel is the real draw here - intricate woodwork and stained glass that catches the afternoon light beautifully, plus a handful of notable monuments if you're into that sort of thing. It's quiet, which is half the appeal. No tour groups, no entry fee, just you and several centuries of Yorkshire history.

Walk around it slowly. The churchyard is peaceful in that particular English way - old graves, towering yews, the sort of place where you'll actually hear birds. If you're staying at Cawood Park just up the road, this makes an easy leg-stretch between park and York itself. Realistically, allow thirty minutes unless you're seriously into ecclesiastical architecture, in which case you'll want longer to sit and absorb. It's genuinely free to visit and typically open during daylight hours, though checking ahead before a trip isn't unreasonable.

Will children get much from it? Depends on the child. A ten-year-old history buff might find it fascinating; a restless six-year-old will get bored after five minutes. For adults interested in medieval Yorkshire or keen walkers using it as a stop between larger attractions, though, it's well worth the detour from York.
