St Andrew, Cotterstock

The church sits alone in the village of Cotterstock, a couple of miles south of Peterborough, and it's the sort of place that rewards a small detour if you're staying at Castle Farm Campsite or exploring the quieter corners of Northamptonshire. St Andrew is medieval at heart - mostly 13th and 14th century - with that satisfying mix of Norman and Perpendicular work that makes church-spotting genuinely addictive.

What strikes you first is how peaceful it is. The churchyard is properly rural, surrounded by fields rather than houses, and the building itself has that worn, lived-in quality of somewhere that's been doing its job for seven centuries without much fuss. Inside, there's decent tracery work if you're into that sort of thing, and the usual run of period features - though nothing so spectacular that it'll dominate your day.

It's really a walker's stop rather than a destination in itself. If you're exploring the villages around Peterborough on foot, or breaking up a caravan holiday with a bit of countryside wandering, it's worth the fifteen minutes to have a look inside. Families with church-bored kids might find it a quick tick-box; serious architecture enthusiasts will get more from it. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a brief sit-down.
