St Aldhelm & St Eadburga

The church sits in the village of Milverton, just a short drive from Taunton, and it's one of those places that rewards a quiet wander even if you're not normally a church person. St Aldhelm and St Eadburga is Saxon in origin - you can feel the age in the stonework - though what you see today is largely medieval. The interior has proper charm: uneven floors that speak to centuries of footfall, wooden beams overhead, and that particular smell of old stone and candle wax that never gets old.

It's ideal if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Dimpsey Shepherd's Hut or Ashe Farm Caravan and Camping Site and want a gentle morning activity. Give it 30 to 45 minutes - enough time to look around properly without rushing, grab a graveside sit if the weather's decent. There's no great treasure hunt of stained glass or monuments, but that's rather the point. This is church-visiting for the atmosphere, not the checklist.

Historically minded visitors will get more from it than most, though families won't find it tedious. Kids might find the graveyard more interesting than the interior, to be honest. It's free to visit, though the doors aren't always open - worth checking locally if you're making a special trip. From Taunton it's maybe 15 minutes' drive through proper Somerset countryside. Best visited midweek when it's quiet, and definitely don't go expecting drama. Go expecting peace.
