About St. Aldhelm Mead
It's a working nature reserve run by the usual conservation lot, which means it's not manicured or signposted to death. You get threading paths through long grass, a few viewing spots, and the genuine pleasure of spotting things that haven't been flattened by tractors. Dragonflies hang over the damper patches. Butterflies work the flowers. It's quiet, which counts for something.
This is genuinely good for families with kids who can walk a bit - not a 10-minute distraction, but a proper 45-minute poke around. Adults who care about wildflowers will lose an hour easily. Photographers come here for the light hitting the grasses in late afternoon. Serious walkers might find it a touch tame compared to the Cotswolds proper, but it makes a solid add-on to a bigger walking day.
Free entry, as far as I can tell. Best visited late May through July when everything's in flower. Winter and early spring it's just wet grass and mud. If you're camped at Burton Hill Caravan Park - literally down the road - this is an easy morning before heading into Malmesbury's market town for lunch. The glamping site at Whychurch Farm is marginally further but worth the extra distance if you want proper comfort.
