Sròn Dubh

The walk up Sròn Dubh is short, sharp, and absolutely worth your time if you're camped around Drumnadrochit. You're looking at roughly 45 minutes to the summit from the car park, climbing about 300 metres through birch woodland before the views open up completely. What you get at the top is proper striking - Loch Ness spreads out beneath you, the water dark and still most days, with the Highlands rolling away to every horizon. It's not a Munro, so don't expect queues or a major expedition. Families with older kids manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the steeper bits near the top.

The climb itself is straightforward enough, no scrambling required, though it can be boggy after rain. On a clear day the sight lines are tremendous - you can pick out Fort Augustus down the loch and the hills beyond. On a cloudy day, frankly, it's a bit underwhelming, so check the forecast first. Allow two hours there and back if you're not racing.

It works well as part of a longer stay at either Loch Ness Glamping or Loch Ness Shores - both are within spitting distance and both excellent bases. Pair it with a walk along the loch shore or a visit to Urquhart Castle ruins, and you've got yourself a proper day. The real magic is in the simplicity of it: no drama, no faffing about, just a solid hill walk with views that justify the effort.
