Square the Block

Richard Wilson's Square the Block sits in London as a deceptively simple concrete installation that stops you dead when you actually look at it. It's a massive cube that appears to be pushing up through the ground - part buried, part emerging. Sounds conceptual and dull on paper, but standing in front of it is genuinely unsettling in the best way.

The sculpture works because Wilson's made you question what you're seeing. Is it coming out of the earth or sinking into it? How much of it is underground? That uncertainty is the whole point, and it's far more engaging than any polished bronze figurine.

You won't need long here - twenty minutes maximum if you're just passing through. But if you're the sort who likes to sit with art and think about it, you could easily spend longer circling it, looking at how light changes the angles, how your perspective shifts. Families with restless kids might find it too abstract and static.

The real value comes if you're combining it with other bits of London - it's not worth a special trip on its own. But if you're staying at Lovat Parks nearby and fancy a day in the city, it's worth hunting down between your museum visits and proper tourist stops. No admission charge, thankfully. Just turn up when you fancy it. Best on a clear day when the light actually means something against the concrete.
