Square Firs

A dense woodland block just outside Chipping Norton that's more purposeful than pretty. Square Firs is working forestry rather than the manicured beech hangers you find elsewhere in the Cotswolds - rows of conifers planted with commercial intent, not scenic ambition. That said, it's got proper walking potential if you know what you're after.

The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is pleasant enough after rain, and the trees are tall enough to create genuine woodland atmosphere. There are a few tracks winding through, though nothing signed or obvious - this isn't a destination with branded trails or facilities. You're essentially walking through someone's timber investment, which has its own appeal if you like that sort of unvarnished countryside.

Suitable for walkers who don't need destination views or photo opportunities. Kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - it lacks the drama or stream-jumping possibilities of more mixed woodland. History buffs will get nothing here. But if you're after a quiet walk while based at Cotswold View Caravan & Camping Site or Cotswolds Caravan and Camping, it's a workable option for an hour or so without venturing far.

Best in autumn when the light's better and the forest floor's interesting. Summer can feel claustrophobic. Go early or late to avoid the feeling you're trespassing - which technically you might be, so check access before turning up. Free to walk, presumably, though that's unconfirmed.
