Spur Wood

Walk into Spur Wood and you're immediately wrapped in Scottish pine and the smell of damp earth. It's a proper forest in the Aberdeenshire Highlands - dense enough to feel like you've properly left civilization, yet close enough to Huntly that you can be here in minutes from town.

The woodland paths wind through mature conifers and mixed trees, with enough variation to keep a ramble interesting without being exhaustingly steep. The forest isn't historic in the visitor-attraction sense, but it's the kind of place that feels timeless, which Aberdeenshire does rather well.

If you're staying at Huntly Castle Holiday Park, Spur Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon outing, though you'll want to pair it with something else to fill a full day - Huntly Castle itself is worth an hour, and there's decent cycling country nearby if that's your thing.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though paths can be muddy after heavy rain. Bring a waterproof and sturdy shoes.
