Springwood

The woodland around Springwood, just east of King's Lynn, feels properly Norfolk - flat terrain, ancient trees, and that particular quality of light you only get in East Anglia. It's a forest walk rather than a destination attraction, the sort of place where you go to actually walk rather than tick something off.

What you get is straightforward: tree-lined paths, space to breathe, and genuine quiet. No café, no visitor centre, no ticket booth. Just woodland as it should be. Dog walkers and families with younger kids will find it manageable enough, though it won't keep teenagers entertained for more than an hour or so. The paths are mostly flat - this is Norfolk after all - which suits anyone after an easy amble rather than a proper hike.

The real value sits in timing. Early morning, before the place fills up, or late afternoon when the light turns golden through the canopy. Rainy days have their own appeal - the forest smells better, and you'll have the trails to yourself.

If you're based at Kings Lynn Caravan & Camping Park - which sits just 2.5 miles away - Springwood works as your morning walk before heading out elsewhere. Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site, four and a half miles distant, puts you closer to the royal estate itself, but Springwood still serves as a quieter alternative on days when you want woodland rather than formal gardens.

Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the area and fancy a proper forest walk. Don't make the journey specially.
