Springfram Rath

A low grass-covered mound in the countryside outside Antrim that marks the site of an Iron Age hill fort - Springfram Rath isn't going to blow your mind, but if you're already in the area it's worth a quick stop. The earthwork itself is subtle, honestly. You're looking at raised ground with a ditch running around it, the sort of thing you might walk past without realising what you're standing on if someone hadn't bothered to mark it.

What makes it interesting is the history beneath your feet. This was a defended settlement, a stronghold of some significance in ancient Ulster. The locals would have lived here, stored supplies, gathered for meetings. Now it's quiet farmland with sheep and the odd walker. There's something oddly moving about that transition from power to peace.

History types will appreciate it more than anyone else, particularly those who've visited other Iron Age sites and want to map the settlement patterns of the region. Kids will find it a bit dull unless they're genuinely into archaeology - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation panels beyond what you might find online beforehand. Plan on fifteen minutes, twenty if you're taking photos or doing sketches.

The real benefit is proximity. If you're staying at Blair's Castlewood or Six Mile Water - both solid parks just under a mile away - this makes an easy morning walk without driving anywhere. Combine it with a wander around Antrim town itself and you've got a decent half-day. On its own, you're making a journey for not much payoff.
