Springfield Park

The River Lee runs through Springfield Park like a green thread connecting north London to the wider world. It's a proper working nature reserve, not one of those manicured spots where everything's been flattened and prettified.

You get two distinct bits here. The wet woodland and meadow side is where you'll spot kingfishers if you're lucky, and the reedbeds attract all manner of birds - great crested grebes, water voles if the gods are smiling. The other half is more open grassland with scattered trees, good for a gentle wander or letting the kids burn off steam without them disappearing into the undergrowth.

It's ideal for local walkers and birdwatchers rather than those after a destination day out. An hour's loop is enough unless you're seriously into spotting things. Free to access, naturally.

If you're staying at Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park in Edmonton - and fair warning, the reviews suggest it's a bit rough around the edges - Springfield is close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere. The park itself won't entertain you for a full day, but combined with a longer walk along the Lee Valley towpath, it becomes part of something more worthwhile. Best visited early morning when the birds are active and before the local dog walkers arrive en masse. Spring and autumn are when you'll see the most action.
