Spring Wood

Spring Wood is a proper bit of ancient woodland just outside Henley-on-Thames, the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk rather than demanding your full day. The forest floor is thick with bluebells in spring - which is rather the whole point of the name - and you'll find yourself on a network of well-trodden paths that loop through stands of beech and oak without ever feeling overcrowded.

It's ideal for families with older kids or anyone who enjoys a gentle woodland wander without the weight of a major attraction. You can easily spend an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to pause and identify birds. Bring binoculars if you're keen on wildlife; the wood holds its own for that. There's something rather settling about walking beneath a mature canopy when the towns along the Thames feel a bit too polished.

Access appears to be free, though information online is sparse - typical for small local woods. From the caravan sites around Henley (Swiss Farm and Henley Four Oaks are both within easy reach), this makes a solid half-morning excursion before settling back to base or heading into town for lunch. Don't expect waymarking or facilities. This is quiet woodland where you navigate by instinct and a reasonable sense of direction. It's not somewhere to drag reluctant toddlers, but anyone over seven or eight will probably enjoy the freedom of the paths. Worth a visit if you're in the area and fancy something low-key and genuinely green.
