Spouts Wood

The woodland at Spouts Wood offers proper Sussex beech and oak - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working forest just outside Winchelsea, nothing fancy, but the paths are well-maintained and the canopy does that thing where light filters through in late afternoon and makes everything look golden.

You're looking at a solid two-hour walk if you take your time, maybe less if you just push through. Locals use it for dog walks and family rambles, which tells you something about how reliable it is. The ground's mostly firm, so winter visits won't leave you wading through mud, though it can get damp after heavy rain. Kids won't get bored - there's enough variation in the terrain to keep things interesting, plus the occasional stream crossing if water levels are up.

If you're staying at Winchelsea Sands Holiday Park, you're barely more than three miles away, which makes this an obvious morning detour before heading elsewhere. Rye Harbour Holiday Park is only a bit further and offers better facilities if that matters. Wheatfields over towards Rye works too if you want something more upmarket.

Admission is free - just turn up. There's limited parking near the entrance, so weekends can get a bit tight. Go mid-week if you can. The wood itself is at its best April through October, when the canopy's full and everything's actually happening. Winter's quieter but muddier. Honestly, it's not a destination in itself, but as part of a wider South Coast break, it's well worth the walk.
