London's splash pads are exactly what they sound like - shallow, interactive water play areas scattered across the city where kids can run through jets, fountains and sprays without needing to swim. You'll find them in parks during summer months, typically free or very cheap to access, and they're genuinely brilliant on a hot day when the alternative is melting on the Northern Line.

They're not attractions in the traditional sense - you won't spend hours here, realistically thirty minutes to an hour is the sweet spot before either the novelty wears off or someone needs a sit-down. What makes them useful is they're perfect for breaking up a day with younger children, especially if you're staying at somewhere like Lovat Parks, just a few miles away. The water's refreshing rather than cold, and there's usually enough space that it doesn't feel chaotic.

Timing matters. Go early morning or late afternoon and you'll have a far more pleasant experience than midday when every parent in Greater London has the same idea.
