Spiral Oak

There's a twisted oak tree near Pewsey that stops people mid-walk. The trunk spirals up on itself like someone wrung it out years ago and it never quite straightened again. It's genuinely unusual - not a forced garden oddity, but an actual tree that decided to grow helter-skelter through the Wiltshire countryside.

The tree itself is the whole attraction, really. You don't climb it or go inside anything. You turn up, look at it, take photos if you're that way inclined, and contemplate why an oak would do such a thing. It takes five minutes, ten if you're the type to sit and sketch it. Walkers on the Wiltshire trails tend to factor it in as a minor diversion, and it works well if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Totteridge Farm or Ridgeway are both close enough for a morning ramble.

Families with young kids might find it underwhelming unless they're keen on trees and odd natural formations. For botanists, tree enthusiasts, or anyone after a genuine curiosity rather than manicured attractions, it's worth the detour. The surrounding countryside rolls properly - open fields, decent walking routes branching off in all directions.

Bring a camera because the spiral is genuinely striking in certain light, and definitely go when it's not raining - muddy paths and dark skies don't do it justice. It's free, it's always accessible, and it makes for a good talking point back at the campsite.
