Spider Park

Spider Park is one of those reserves you stumble upon by accident near Bicester and end up spending longer in than you planned. It's essentially a working nature reserve where eight-legged residents genuinely outnumber the visitors - the whole point is to protect spiders and their habitats, which means the place feels properly wild and uncultivated.

The reserve itself is compact but dense with interest. You'll find meadows, scrubland, and a few specimen trees where different spider species live. Most visitors won't spend more than ninety minutes here unless you're genuinely into arachnids or keen on spotting particular species. Families with young children get restless quickly - there's no visitor centre, café, or obvious entertainment. Adults interested in natural history, however, find it absorbing. Spring and early autumn are best for spotting spiders; they're everywhere in late summer.

It's free to access, which is generous. The paths are straightforward and muddy in places. Bring a hand lens if you're serious about identification. The nearest proper facilities are in Bicester itself, about three miles north.
