Speech House Lake

The lake sits in a clearing deep within the Forest of Dean, ringed by conifers and accessible via a decent walk from the Speech House car park. It's a proper working reservoir - no paddling or swimming allowed - but that's almost the point. You're here for the walk and the wildlife, not a dip.

The circuit takes about 45 minutes at a steady pace, and the path is well-maintained throughout. On a quiet weekday morning, you'll have the place nearly to yourself. The water reflects the surrounding trees beautifully, especially in autumn when the deciduous species start turning gold. Birdwatchers find it rewarding - great crested grebes, cormorants, and if you're lucky, kingfishers.

It's free and there's no visitor centre or facilities at the lake itself, so bring a flask if you want tea. The Speech House pub is nearby in Lydney if you fancy something to eat afterwards. This works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading to either Bracelands Campsite or Doward Park Campsite - both are five miles away and well-rated for families. Kids will manage the walk fine, though toddlers might struggle with the distance.
