Spa ponds Forest town

Three Victorian-era ponds sit quietly in the middle of Mansfield's Forest Town, a reminder of when this was proper spa country. They're not massive - you could walk round all three in twenty minutes if you weren't stopping to look - but there's something genuinely peaceful about them, especially on a weekday when you've got the place to yourself.

The ponds were dug out in the 1800s when Forest Town was being developed as a leisure destination, back when people thought the local water had healing properties. These days it's just a nice spot to sit, watch the water, spot a few ducks. The walking paths around them are easy enough for anyone, though it's not exactly a destination in itself - more of a pleasant half-hour diversion if you're exploring Mansfield town centre.

It works best if you're staying at The Sherwood Hideaway nearby and fancy a gentle stroll without driving anywhere. Kids under ten might get bored quickly unless they're the type to throw stones in water for an hour. But if you're after somewhere quiet to clear your head between activities, the ponds deliver. There's no charge to visit and no formal opening hours - just show up whenever. Winter's actually decent here; the place feels less exposed when the trees are bare, and you get better light on the water.
