About Southwick Wood NR
It's a working nature reserve managed by the Wildlife Trust, which means the paths are well-maintained but the whole place feels genuinely wild. Bluebells in spring, plenty of bird activity, and the kind of canopy coverage that keeps things cool even on warm days. The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter and moss - it's the sort of place where you half-expect to turn a corner and find a small clearing with a log cabin.
Really suits walkers and anyone interested in woodland ecology. If you've got restless teenagers expecting thrills, they'll be bored inside an hour. Birdwatchers, though, will spend a morning here easily. The reserve is free to access, which is excellent.
Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing the full circuit. Spring and early summer are best - winter can get muddy and access is sometimes restricted. It works well as a morning activity before heading into Peterborough for lunch, or as a quieter alternative to the bigger, busier parks in the region. Not Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
