Southey Methodist Church

The red-brick Victorian chapel sits quietly on a Sheffield backstreet, unremarkable from the outside until you step through the doors. Southey Methodist Church is a proper period piece - all original pews, cast-iron railings, and that particular smell of old hymn books that Methodist chapels seem to trap in their walls. Built in the 1870s, it's the sort of place that rewards a brief visit rather than demanding hours of your time, but there's something genuinely moving about standing where generations of Sheffield worshippers have stood.

History enthusiasts and those with an interest in Victorian religious architecture will find plenty to appreciate here. The interior fittings are largely intact, which is rarer than you'd think - many chapels have been gutted or converted. It's free to pop in (though do check opening hours locally, as these places don't always publicise them well), and fifteen minutes is a reasonable amount of time unless you're really into Methodist heritage.

If you're camping at Fox Hagg Farm or Wyming Brook Farm - both just a few miles away - this makes an easy addition to a Sheffield exploring day. The city's got stronger attractions if you're only here a day or two, but if you're already in the area and walking through the suburbs, it's worth a detour. Don't expect the grandeur of a cathedral, mind. This is intimate, local, and genuinely lived-in rather than polished for tourists.
