Southease Hill

The walk up Southease Hill rewards you with proper views across the South Downs and down to Newhaven, which is handy if you're staying at one of the local caravan parks. It's a straightforward climb from the village - nothing that'll leave you gasping, but it's steep enough to feel like you've earned the vista at the top.

The hill itself is chalk grassland, so in summer the wildflowers are decent, and you'll spot buzzards circling if you're lucky. The actual summit isn't marked with anything fancy - no trig point, no bench - but that's rather the point. You stand there, the wind in your face, and that's enough.

For walkers staying at Three Ponds Holiday Park or Chalky Downs Campsite, this works brilliantly as a morning jaunt before lunch. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the way back tedious. Allow about ninety minutes return if you're not rushing. Go on a clear day. On a grey Sussex afternoon it's just damp grass and not much to write home about.

It's free, naturally, and you access it from the lane near Southease village. The nearest proper facilities are in Newhaven, a couple of miles down, so bring water. Not a headline attraction, but if you're based locally and want a proper walk without faffing about on marked routes all day, it delivers.
