South Hill

The walk up South Hill from Newhaven rewards you with proper views across the Sussex coast and inland valleys. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a modest rise that locals know well - but on a clear day you can see right across to the South Downs and down towards the cliffs.

Getting there takes about twenty minutes on foot from Newhaven town centre, depending on your route. The ascent is gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog. The actual summit isn't marked with anything fancy - just open grassland and a decent vantage point. Time it right and you'll have the place largely to yourself, which makes a change from the crowded viewpoints elsewhere in Sussex.

Walkers will find it a solid leg-stretcher if you're basing yourself at Three Ponds Holiday Park nearby. You could easily combine it with a coastal walk down to Newhaven seafront, making for a half-day outing that doesn't require booking or paying entrance fees. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's the sort of unsung spot that rewards turning up and actually looking around. Best in late afternoon when the light softens across the landscape and Newhaven gets properly interesting from above.
