South Foreland Heritage Coast

The cliffs here rise up proper dramatic, all chalky white and striped with flint, and you can see why people have been drawn to this stretch of Kent coast for centuries. South Foreland is less about a single attraction and more about the walk itself - the Heritage Coast path takes you along some of the finest white cliffs in England, with Dover visible in the distance and the sea churning below. The walk from St Margaret's Bay (where the nearest holiday park sits, literally 1.1 miles away) gives you about three hours of good coastal rambling, depending on your pace and how often you stop to gawp at the view.

The cliffs tell the story - you'll spot the South Foreland Lighthouse perched up top, a Victorian red and white striped tower that's been guiding ships since 1846. It's still operational, which feels rather marvellous given its age. History buffs will appreciate the smuggling connections and the wartime bunkers hidden in the chalk, though there's not much interpretation on site, so do your homework first.

It's free to walk the coastal path, and you won't need more than a couple of hours for the main stretch. Go on a clear day - the visibility towards France changes everything. Families with younger kids might find it a bit relentless underfoot, all uneven chalk and exposed edges, but teenagers and proper walkers will love it. The nearby holiday parks at St Margaret's Bay and Kingsdown put you within easy striking distance, making this an excellent half-day outing from your base. Wear decent shoes and bring water.
