South Beach

The beach that actually gets used by locals in Aberystwyth rather than clogged with day-trippers. South Beach runs along the town's southern edge, backed by a proper promenade with the usual seaside amenities - fish and chips shops, amusement arcades, a funfair that's seen better days. The sand is decent enough, dark and firm, and at low tide it stretches back far enough that you're not crammed shoulder-to-shoulder even in summer.

It's the working beach, frankly. You'll see families actually swimming here rather than just paddling, windsurfers on decent swell days, and dog walkers who've timed their visit for when pooches are allowed. The seafront promenade stretches north towards Aberystwyth town centre and its Victorian pier - worth the walk if you've got the energy, though the pier itself is a bit tired these days.

If you're staying at Aberystwyth Holiday Village or Clarach Bay, you're practically on the doorstep. The beach works best for families who want traditional seaside without the National Trust gift shop experience. Bring a wetsuit unless you're visiting in July or August - the water stays chilly. Parking's straightforward along the seafront, and there's enough shelter and facilities to spend a full day here without heading into town.

Not dramatic, not Instagrammable, but honest. That's South Beach.
