Soot Wood

Walking into Soot Wood near Hitchin, you're immediately struck by how dark it feels - the canopy is properly dense here, which is exactly why it gets its name. This is a working woodland, managed quietly without fuss, and that's rather the point. There are footpaths winding through, nothing too strenuous, just good honest woodland walking with beech and oak overhead.

It's the sort of place where families with younger kids can actually let them loose without worrying they'll wander into a gift shop. The paths are easy enough for a pushchair if you stick to the main routes, though after rain they do get muddy. Allow a solid hour if you want to properly explore rather than just tick it off. Walkers and nature types will get more out of it than those expecting manicured picnic areas - there's little infrastructure, which frankly is refreshing.

The wood sits well as part of a broader Hertfordshire woodland crawl. You're between Hitchin and some genuinely good walking country, and it pairs nicely with a night or two at one of the local parks - Almshoe Glamping is barely two miles away if you want to add a glamping element to your trip, or Jacks Hill Caravans if you're after something more traditional.

Best visited in autumn when the floor is carpeted in leaves, or spring when it's all new growth. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic under that heavy canopy. Free to visit, naturally - it's just a wood.
