Somersham Nature Reserve

The wetlands around Somersham, just outside Huntingdon, are genuinely worth an afternoon if you're camped nearby. It's not dramatic - no dramatic gorges or mountain vistas - but the reserve itself is the kind of place where you might actually spot something: marsh harriers, lapwings, the occasional bittern if you're lucky and patient. The paths wind through reedbeds and open water, and there's a real sense of being away from it all despite Cambridgeshire's flatness.

Bring binoculars. Seriously. This is birdwatcher territory, though families with kids won't regret a gentle walk here either - the landscape shifts enough to keep young legs interested, and there's something oddly compelling about watching the water change colour with the light. Spring and autumn are the best times, when migrating birds pass through and the place feels properly alive.

The nearest proper facilities are in Huntingdon, so plan accordingly. Allow a couple of hours for a leisurely wander rather than expecting a full day's outing. It fits well with a stay at Long Island Lake or Cuckoo Fen Campsite - both within easy reach - if you're after some peace and quiet between days out. Realistically, it's the kind of spot that works best if you're genuinely into wildlife. If you're after dramatic scenery or family attractions, you'll probably find somewhere else more gripping. But if you want to slow down and actually look at something, this delivers.
