Somerford Common

Somerford Common is a proper woodland walk on the Gloucestershire-Wiltshire border, just outside Swindon's sprawl. It's the sort of place locals know about and visitors often miss - nothing fancy, just trees, open grassland, and enough space to actually hear yourself think.

The main draw is a straightforward loop through mixed woodland with patches of open common. You'll find tracks well-trodden enough to follow without a map, though it can get muddy after rain. There's no visitor centre or facilities, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you're not rushing. Kids will manage it fine - there's enough to explore without being exhausting.

Historically it's common land, which means it's been grazed and managed by locals for centuries. These days it's just a quiet spot to walk, sit with a coffee from a flask, and decompress. Dog walkers absolutely love it here.

It's free, accessible year-round, and works as a proper break from the caravan park rather than a destination in itself. Better paired with walks at Symonds Yat or the Forest of Dean if you're planning a proper Gloucestershire woodland trip, but as a morning amble from your pitch, it does the job well.
