Smithwood Common (North)

You won't find crowds at Smithwood Common, and that's precisely why it's worth the short drive from Guildford. This Surrey nature reserve is the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong - proper quiet, the kind that makes you remember why you booked a holiday park in the first place.

The northern section has open heathland mixed with woodland, typical of the Surrey commons but feeling more genuine than manicured. You're walking through low scrub, silver birch, and gorse, with paths that fork naturally rather than follow a rigid route. In spring and early summer the heather and gorse are flowering, and if you're lucky you'll spot adders sunbathing on the sandy patches - they're harmless if left alone, and honestly quite beautiful.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination in itself. Give it ninety minutes to two hours to do a decent loop. Families with young kids might find it less compelling than a proper country park - there's no cafe, no play equipment, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. If your children demand constant stimulation, they'll be bored within half an hour. But if they like exploring, turning over logs, spotting insects and birds, this delivers.

Free to access, and close enough to Edgeley Holiday Park and Firesyde if you're staying in the area. Best visited in May or early June when the common's at its most interesting ecologically. Winter's bleak and muddy. Autumn can be lovely though - golden light, fewer insects, and the place feels properly wild.
