Small Down Knoll

Small Down Knoll isn't going to take your breath away, but that's partly the point. This modest Somerset peak sits near Castle Cary and offers the sort of straightforward hill walk that works brilliantly when you're based at one of the nearby glamping sites and the weather's turned a bit dodgy.

The climb itself is gentle rather than demanding - you're looking at maybe an hour return depending on fitness and meandering. The views from the top spread across the Somerset Levels in one direction and towards the Mendips in the other, which is pleasing enough without being spectacular. It's the kind of spot where you genuinely notice the light changing across the fields.

Families with reasonably mobile kids will find this manageable without the whinging factor of a proper slog. Walkers using it as a warm-up or cool-down between longer routes won't feel they've wasted their time. History types might appreciate the general lie of the land - you're in proper old Somerset country - though there's nothing dramatic perched on the summit itself.

The real strength is accessibility. Free, unrestricted, and close enough to Hadspen Glamping or Glamping on the Hill that you can nip out for an afternoon ramble without overthinking it. Don't go expecting wilderness or solitude, but if you want to stretch your legs without committing to a full day's expedition, Small Down Knoll does the job. Go on a clear day and bring a flask.
