Small cave

There's a small cave tucked into the Devon coastline near Bideford that makes for a curious half-hour detour if you're already walking the cliffs. It's nothing grand - no vast chambers or underground rivers - but it's the kind of spot where you can actually get inside a proper geological formation without needing specialist equipment or a guide. The cave sits accessible from the beach at certain tide states, so timing matters. Low tide gives you the best window to poke about and see the rock formations up close. Kids quite like it, though they'll lose interest once they've had a look around - it's not a destination that'll occupy you for hours.

The real charm is how it fits into a coastal walk rather than standing alone. The cave itself costs nothing to visit, and you don't need booking or opening hours to worry about. Just check the tide tables before you head down. The Bideford area has plenty of proper beach time and proper walks without needing to plan around a small cave, but if you're already out exploring the coastline, it's well worth the slight scramble. Bring decent shoes - the approach can be muddy and the rocks underfoot are slippery when wet.
