Slievebeg

Cloud cover can turn this 534-metre peak into a proper slog for very little reward, but catch it on a clear day and you'll understand why serious walkers rate the Mournes so highly. Slievebeg sits just south of Castlewellan and offers one of the more accessible climbs in this stunning mountain range.

The ascent takes about two hours from the nearest car park, following well-worn paths through typical Mourne granite terrain. It's not technically difficult, though the final approach can be boggy after rain. What sets this walk apart is the panoramic view from the summit - you can see across to the Isle of Man on really clear days, with the entire Mourne range spread out before you.

Families with older children will manage fine, but toddlers definitely won't. The terrain is too rough and the distance too far for little legs. Serious hikers often use Slievebeg as a warm-up before tackling Slieve Donard or as part of a longer ridge walk.

With several camping options nearby including Tollymore Campsite and The Rock Caravan and Camping, it makes sense to stay locally rather than drive up from Belfast for the day. Early morning starts give you the best chance of clear views, and you'll often have the summit to yourself before the crowds arrive.
