Slieve Croob viewpoint

The drive up Slieve Croob rewards you with one of those rare views that actually justifies the effort. At 1,745 feet, it's not a mountain that demands serious climbing - more a determined walk up rough track - but the panorama from the top sweeps across County Down in all directions, taking in the Mourne Mountains proper to the south and the rolling farmland stretching towards Castlewellan and beyond.

On a clear day, you can see for miles. On a grey one, which is frankly more common, the cloud often sits lower than the summit, which is annoying. The viewpoint itself is basic - a cairn, some weathered stones, the occasional wind-bent shrub. What makes it worth the trip is the walk itself. The terrain's rough underfoot, so proper boots help, and there's no shelter once you're up there.

This appeals most to walkers wanting something achievable without committing a whole day. Parents with capable kids aged eight-plus will manage it fine. History buffs won't find much to grab onto - it's more about the landscape and the space than any particular story.

It's free, and the drive up is scenic enough to make even the parking area feel worthwhile. Allow a couple of hours from Castlewellan if you're doing the walk properly. Several camping spots sit within easy striking distance - Slieve Croob Camping is just down the road, and Escape Glamping or Pine Tree Hollow are closer still if you want something less basic. Best visited on a day when the forecast actually promises some visibility.
