Sliabh an Ruighe Dhuibh

The walk up Sliabh an Ruighe Dhuibh from Beauly takes you into proper Highland terrain without the crowds that swarm Ben Nevis. It's a serious hill rather than a casual stroll - expect two to three hours up and the same back down, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath and gawk at the views.

What makes this peak worth your time is the approach itself. You're moving through real glens, past water and bracken, with the mountain rising steadily in front of you. On a clear day the sight lines from the summit stretch across to the Cairngorms. Muggy days? The cloud sits lower and changes the whole mood - atmospheric rather than panoramic, which has its own appeal.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the sort of mountain that rewards a decent level of fitness and proper boots, but it won't break you if you're reasonably active. Families might find it a bit much for younger legs, though determined teenagers will manage it fine. There's a real sense of achievement at the top that you don't always get from easier peaks.

Park yourself at Cannich Woodland Camping and Caravan Park - less than five miles away and properly set up for walking holidays. The site has everything you'd want for a few nights using it as a base to explore the area. Free admission to the hill, obviously. Go midweek if possible; weekends bring more footfall.
