Slewlan Hill

The walk up Slewlan Hill is a proper leg-burner, but the payoff from the summit is genuinely worth the sweat. You're looking at a fairly relentless climb through open moorland with views that just keep expanding the higher you get - on a clear day you can see right across to the coast near Stranraer. The hill itself isn't particularly tall by Scottish standards, but that directness means you feel like you've actually earned something by the time you reach the top.

Local walkers swear by it, and you'll understand why once you're up there. The moorland terrain is quite bare and exposed, so pick a day without wind and you're golden. If it's drizzly, save it for another time - there's no shelter, and bog underfoot becomes annoying rather than atmospheric. Allow a solid two hours for the round trip if you're a decent pace walker, a bit longer if you're taking it steady.

This works brilliantly alongside a week at Sands of Luce Holiday Park, just a few miles away near Stranraer. It's close enough that you can do it as a morning mission without eating up your whole day. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper hike will get a lot from it. Younger ones might find the moorland a bit bleak and featureless - there's not much to distract them on the way up.
