Sleeves Wood

The paths through Sleeves Wood feel properly quiet even when you're barely twenty minutes from Heathfield. Ancient oaks tower overhead, their trunks thick enough that you'd need three of you holding hands to wrap around them. What you get here is straightforward - a mix of woodland trails that meander through dense forest without any of the tourist machinery you'd find elsewhere in East Sussex.

It's the kind of walk that appeals to people who actually enjoy being in woodland rather than ticking off a postcode. Families with restless kids might find it a bit samey after an hour, but walkers after proper solitude will appreciate the depth of the forest. You can lose yourself in here without losing the path entirely, which is the sweet spot for a proper woodland ramble.

There's no visitor centre to faff about with, no car park charges that I'm aware of, and the whole thing feels refreshingly unpretentious. Bring decent boots though - it gets boggy after rain and the forest floor doesn't drain well. Spring is cracking if you want to catch bluebells, but honestly, it's decent year-round.
